Questions about the exam

Situation

You have an exam coming up, but you don't know exactly what is expected of you or how to prepare for the exam.

Hintergrundinformation

It is important to clarify questions about exam requirements before registering. In a preliminary discussion with the examiner, organisational and content-related questions about the examination can be clarified independently of an appointment. In principle, the following steps are usual for registering for an examination:

  • Determine the examination topic

  • Obtain the consent of the examiner

  • Arrange examination date

  • Register with the examination office (many universities now do this online)

  • Write and send a thesis paper and a bibliography to the examiner (by e-mail at least one week before the exam)

Tip

The preliminary discussion for the examination should take place as early as possible. Only then will the results of such an interview be useful for your preparation. For the preliminary interview, you should be clear about what exactly you want to find out.

Examination dates should only be firmly agreed if they can realistically be kept. It is therefore advisable not to register for an appointment until you are sure that you will have enough time to prepare for the exam.
